September 17: JRVHS visits The Whaling Museum and Historic New Bedford. In the morning a visit to the Whaling Museum which houses the world’s largest collection of whaling artifacts is planned.  There also will be time to visit the surrounding National Historical Park which includes the Seaman’s Bethel described by Melville in Moby-Dick, the Customs House as well as antique shops worthy of exploring and a variety of places for lunch.  In the afternoon there is a docent led tour of the Rotch- Jones- Duff  House Museum, one of the “brave houses and flowery gardens” also described in Moby-Dick.

The Jones River Village Historical Society works to collect, preserve and educate the public about the history of the town of Kingston.  It makes its collections accessible through exhibitions, research assistance and educational programs and lectures.  It also preserves, protects and maintains the Society’s headquarters, the Major John Bradford Homestead.
